People keep writing that if Trump is convicted it will suddenly sway people’s minds. Trump was found liable. Of rape! That didn’t have any effect whatsoever on his support. True it’s not a conviction but the average American will not see the difference. I think people need to stop waiting for Trump’s support to decrease. Or to wait for these people who don’t follow the news to suddenly wake up and realize that he shouldn’t even be considered as a potential president again. It was quite clear at every point that he led this insurrection, that he tried to cheat to win, that he is a cheat when it comes to his finances. He hasn’t been hiding any of this. It has been reported ad nauseam. What information do people think will suddenly make people see the light?
I think Iowa revealed Trump’s support within the Republican party is weak. 50% of a reduced electorate rather than 80-90% show that a good chunk of Republican’s aren’t overjoyed about Trump being their nominee. But these people still, for some incomprehensible reason, believe that he is better than a Democrat. I think the best hope is that these nonplussed Republicans stay home and that enough uninformed independents decide to vote for Democrats because that is much better for the country. And that Democrats actually turn out again this year as they did in 2020 (for all the reasons that we know it is incredibly important). And it would be great if the Israeli war were ended too (but I’m not holding my breath on that either).
